| Flooring Installation Techniques |
| |
How flooring is installed depends upon the type of flooring material. The most common flooring materials are listed below with a brief overview of their installation process.
Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring is very prevalent due to its beauty, durability, and ability to sand and refinish in the future. The initial installation of hardwood flooring is a complex process. The contractor will first bring all the necessary planks into your home to acclimate to the humidity. You want to minimize any shrinking or expanding of the hardwood boards before they are laid down. After this process is complete the floor will be prepped for the hardwood. The planks will be nailed and/or glued into place. A succession of sanding, staining, treating, and applying polyurethane will then follow. Each step will generally need a drying period in between and some steps need several coats. The final coat of polyurethane will need a good 2-3 days to set before it takes any foot traffic on the floor. Another thing to keep in mind when installing hardwood floors is the clean up required. Sanding creates a lot of dust that will travel throughout the home. Also, the stain and polyurethane will create toxic fumes that will need to aired out.
Laminate Floors
Laminate flooring is gaining popularity because it costs less than hardwood, tile, or stone, is more durable, and is easier to install. Laminate can often mimic the look of these other flooring choices. Laminate flooring is installed as a floating floor. A foam pad is laid on the subfloor. Next, the laminate floorboard planks interlock into place. There is no nailing or gluing required. Best of all, as soon as the last board is snapped into place, you can start walking on your new laminate floor.
Ceramic and Stone Tile
Ceramic or stone tile is very durable, easy to maintain, and has a beauty all its own. The beauty of the installation job is just as important as the beauty of the tiles themselves. A professional contractor can ensure all tiles are laid square and grout lines are consistent. The installation of tile is a very detailed project. After prepping the floor to ensure it is level and clean, tile cement is applied to the floor. Next, the tile must be laid accurately according to size and design. After the tile has set, grout must then be applied between all tiles. Once the grout is dry proper clean up can be initiated. You cannot use the room until the entire process is complete.
Carpet
Traditional carpet is always a favorite, particularly in bedrooms or other living areas where people want a comfortable, soft floor. Carpet installation is pretty straight forward. After sweeping the subfloor, carpet padding is laid down. Carpet nail strips are then laid around the baseboards. The carpet is stretched across the room and onto the nail strips to ensure it stays in place. You can also glue the carpeting down, but that is not as common. Once the carpet is laid, you should vacuum it thoroughly and air out the room for 1-2 days.
Flooring Installation
Regardless of what type of flooring you choose, you should contact a professional contractor to handle the installation. They have experience and will ensure your end result is a high quality and durable floor. Any installation deficiencies can lead to further problems in the future, and further costs. Flooring should really be one of the last items on a remodeling project. Again, your contractor can help you schedule the flooring accordingly so no other trades, i.e. painting, cabinets, ruin your new floor.
